Youth Action

What is it?

Youth Action is when young people work together on their own project to improve something in their community – that could be the school you go to, the area you live in or a group of people you have something in common with, like your mates.

There have been loads of exciting Youth Action projects and some examples include:

  • Setting up a music recording studio
  • Organising a youth festival, with DJs, bands, dancers, artists and circus
  • Producing a short film about what life is like for young people in Exeter
  • Running a quiz night to raise money for a local charity
  • Designing graffiti artwork for legal sites, such as a community centre
  • Campaigning for a skate park to be built

If you have an idea that would make your community better, contact us [link to contact] and one of the team can talk to you about what you want to do and support you to make it real. We can support you to set clear aims, plan your project, get funds for things like equipment, get publicity and making sure you are safe.

Note: This Youth Action approach to volunteering is at the heart of the work of The Ivy Project. Experience has shown that this approach offers an incredibly empowering, quality experience. This, coupled with its flexibility, significantly increases the numbers and diversity of young people seeking volunteering activities.

The Youth Action approach was recently endorsed by Ian M Russell in the Executive Summary of the Russell Commission. In fact, Russell Commission research showed that ‘95% of young people want an active role in shaping their own volunteering opportunities’.
